We recently hosted a webinar on how to start a fund with Brooklyn Bridge Ventures and Foley Hoag. You can read our complete summary and see the recording here:

Mutual funds are generally measured relative to a benchmark. Absolute return strategies are generally employed by hedge funds.

Absolute returns aim to be positive regardless of the market(where as a relative return funds value could drop yet still outperform). This doesnt always work out in reality, as one can see from a hedge funds maximum drawdown (biggest % drop in value from a peak).

Their greatest use is that they may provide diversification. This is a benefit of holding investments that are not perfectly correlated. The expertise of the fund manager may also provide access to high risk adjusted returns.

Low liquidity – most hedge fund investments are subject to a lock-up period which restricts what can be withdrawn.

High fees – (the historical standard has been 2% of the capital invested + 20% of the value in excess of a hurdle rate)

Complexity – this can make it very difficult as an investor to assess the risk involved.

Low disclosure – (a lot of hedge funds operate in secrecy or delay any announcements of their holdings so competitors cant duplicate their strategy). Again, this can make it difficult to assess risk.

High barrier to entry – investment is restricted to sophisticated or accredited investors (a fancy way of saying you have to be worth $1m or $5m respectively).
